CHAPTER 3

Going through the book of spells and potions, she found the perfect way to make Snow White die. She would feed her the poisonous apple. The queen went out of her chamber, to grab an apple. When the sunlight hit her skin, she flinched, surprised at the paleness of her color. Trying to ignore her ashen white skin, she picked an apple from the orchard and ran back. Just as she was going to step back in her chamber, she heard the king call for her.

“Alignite!” He called, walking up to her. His chopped hair held streaks of grey, his once healthy tanned skin turned to pale white like her own. He looked desperate. “I haven’t seen you for months! What in the world have you been up to?” The king asked, trying to hold her arm. The queen thrust his hand away in disgust.

“Don’t touch me you filthy-“ she stopped herself and drew her crown off and handed it to the king. The king took it in horror.

“What is the matter with you?” His voice was barely above a whisper.

“Why? Does it scare you to think that I may leave the throne empty? With Snow White gone, you will have no heir. Is that what you’re so afraid of?” She demanded, snatching the crown back from his hands. The king shook in guilt.

“I’m…I couldn’t control myself, Snow White was so…so…so beautiful, she looked just like you when you were young-“

“No.” The queen said bitterly, her eyes glaring in hate. “She surpassed my looks and you fell for your own daughter. You are a disgrace.” The queen said, walking back into her chamber. When she glanced at him from her window, he was walking back to his chamber heads down. She could feel tears rolling down her face. “I did love him,” she murmured, and it was true. Twenty years ago, the old princess Alignite and prince Edwick were in passionate love. When the new queen bore a baby girl, it ruined everything. Now, the queen was completely convinced that Snow White was the cause of all her troubles.

Quickly and excitedly, the queen placed her apple down, and coated it with red. It looked so tempting from all directions; the thin skin was covering the juicy fruit, the shine unmistakable. Even the queen fell for the temptation and nearly ate it. Though it looked undoubtedly appealing, who ever ate the apple would definitely die.

A few days later, she disguised herself into another poor old women, this time, with much gentler looks than the last one. To her fortune, the disguise came out perfectly, her shriveled white hair in a low bun, her wrinkled face filled with smile lines and drooped skin covered by humble rags. Then, the queen walked to the hut again, to find Snow White alone, humming to herself while baking a tart.

“I sell apples,” she cried in a feeble voice, knocking on her door. She made sure to hunch down, as if she had back problems. Snow White came rushing to the door, and as soon as she saw the queen, let her in with haste.
